Unidentified Period Dramas
- I can't remember the name to this show, I am hoping you may give me the name if I describe it to you. Well there are twins in it, well I think they are twins a boy and a girl, as I remember they were ghosts of some sort, that haunt an estate. A woman comes along, like a new maid and can see these children, but others act like they do not know of them and send her to a mental institute thinking she has gone mad, but I think it was because she was close to uncovering a dark secret about the place well the family. I can not think of the name of the film but I do know it is a period drama.
- Suggestion: Refer number 1 it is "The Innocents".
- Suggestion: I believe #1 on the title help page is "The Turn of the Screw" (2009).
- PeriodDramas.com: The working title of the 1961 movie "The Innocents" is "The Turn of the Screw". So it is probably either the 1961 movie or the 2009 movie, both of which are based on the 1898 novella "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James.
- Hi, I am trying to find the name of a period drama/romance I used to watch as a teen. I can't remember anything about it but it was on VHS and the cover was made of a dark red/maroon velvet (I think with cutouts and pictures). It may have been a made for TV movie. I used to get it out ALL the time from the video store and have recently been wondering about it. I have googled and googled all sorts of descriptions and came across your site. I was wondering if some of your members of site visitors may have a clue as to what this movie was called...
- I'm hoping this will sound familiar to someone! I saw a movie on TV at least 5 years ago and I can only remember a few plot points. No actors, etc. The movie didn't look too old, so I've been looking from mid-90s+. There's a portrait painter who is called in to paint a portrait for some form of nobility (a woman, I think). If I remember correctly, she's quite taken with him. There's also a young woman who was raised in a nunnery (orphan?) and an older gentleman who takes the girl as his wife. I think he contributed to the nunnery quite a bit. For some reason I think he was remodeling or renovating his house. The girl was not too thrilled to be given to this man. Toward the end of the movie, there's a huge fire where the painter lives. I remember houses close together but I'm not sure. He's got an infant and when he sees/hears of the fire he rushes home but his house is already engulfed in flames. I believe he finds later that the baby was rescued by a woman, the nanny? But I could be wrong about that, he may have gotten there in time to take the baby himself... So there are a lot of holes in that plot, obviously. I've had no luck so far and it's been bugging me for years. If this sounds the least bit familiar, please let me know! It's probably right under my nose. Thank you!
- Suggestion: Was it a British or American film? I am conjuring up and image of the actress Jane Seymour but could be wrong.
- It's driving me mad - but I can't remember the name of a costume drama I know I watched with my mum when I was younger. It was in the 1990s (I think late) and it was based on a young family who had to go and live in a tent during (I think) WW1. There were a lot of tents and a whole village hiding out from the war. I remember a youngish girl/woman was in charge of her family and there was a love interest. Can you think what it was called? If you can, I would really appreciate you contacting me with the answer! Many Thanks.
- Suggestion: Hi, I cannot remember the name of the series regarding Q4 - just that it was set in WW2 not 1. The people in tents where bombed out of their homes and where trying to build homes on the site. Kind of a self build scheme. Was based on true events - the self build bit.
- I remember seeing a period film when I was a boy (in the mid 1990's) but I cannot remember the title, the cast, or any major details.
All I remember ...It is about a young woman in early 19th century who goes to live near the sea. There is a duplicitous clergyman who is very pale and creepy. It ends with some other man rescuing the girl from the clergyman. I remember the film having a very moody look with a limited color palette.
It was probably broadcast on A&E in the United States, but I don't know if it was a television adaptation or a screen adaptation that was played on television. Does anyone know what movie this is?
- Suggestion: Sounds a little like Jamaica Inn. It could have been either the Hitchcock film made in 1939 or the 1983 TV production starring Jane Seymour.
- Hi, some time ago I saw a trailer for a period drama. The problem is that I can't remember the name. I think the plot was that two men made a "living" of seducing women and elope with them. The womens fathers would then pay a rather large sum to get their daughters back, and the men would make money in an easy way. But in this story, they fall in love with the girls. I've looked everywhere, but I can't find it. I would love some help.
- Suggestion: This sounds not entirely unlike the Abduction Club.
- Suggestion: I agree, #6 sounds like the Abduction Club with Sophia Myles.
- Okay...I have stumped many a period drama enthusiast with this one, but I can't remember the title for the life of me. I think I saw it on netflix but I don't know. Here is does...it starts at an affluent home that is struggling with 3 or 4 sisters and a single mother (I think). The youngest sister is sent to live with their cranky great aunt, whom the other sister's had met but she had not. The old lady eventually takes a liking to her and they become quite close then the aunt's nephew or son comes home from school I think and the girl and him fall in love. I remember the scene where they tell the aunt vividly. The girl and the aunt are sitting in a dark room she is reading to the aunt and the aunt is sewing they are sitting next to each other the aunt on the right facing the stairs. The son come down the stairs and tells the aunt he is in love with a girl and how wonderful she is. The aunt is thrilled and then the girl stands up and stands next to him when she sees the aunt is pleased as reveals she is the girl he is talking about. The aunt is LIVID and feels betrayed and sends the girl from her home. and thats all I remember. I know it must have had a happy ending for me to love it so much but I can't remember what happens I think the aunt welcomes the girl back but still doesnt approve. I think she welcomes her back because she is sick, but that might be a bleed over from another movie. HELP!!!
- Trying to find a period drama serial from around 1980s set in Japan before the second world war and called something like The Joshua Tree or The Banjan Tree. About a Scottish woman and her relationship with a Japanese samurai, ending with WWII. Done by either BBC or ITV. Do you remember it?
