Title Help

I saw a movie about 20 years but I can't remember the title or the actors.
I remember it was about a young couple getting married, they were poor and lived in a sparingly decorated old house. The husband tends to drink at the local pub and the wife is left to herself. There was something about a painting or castle. I might be around the 1940's or 50's and could take place in either a small English, Irish or Scottish town. At one point she tries to leave but can't and she sits on her suitcase at the train station.
Any ideas??
