Pretty sure it's Rebecca. The setting is the 50's, but the dress in question is a 19th century white hoop skirt confection with large picture hat, made for the costume ball. Maxim flys into a rage when he sees her dressed like Rebecca. And yes, it was Joan Fontaine.
