Title Help

I was watching this film after my mum fell asleep when i was younger and i cant for the life of me remember the name. I know 'Girl'was in the title if that's any use. it looked 1980-90, old kind of setting, it was about a girl who fell in love with a man but was then forced to marry someone else (a fat man with dark hair??)
