After being held prisoner in America after the Revolutionary War Ross Polldark returns home to Cornwall to find that his father has died, most of the money is gone, his home is a wreck-thanks to two drunken family-retainers and his lady love is engaged to his cousin. The series is about his struggles to make a go of the family land and copper mines, his love life and trouble with his nouveau riche nasty neighbors.
