I'm not sure if this helps, but I do recall a series called "How We Used to Live". It was an educational show from England with many seasons. Each one took place during a different time period. You can find episodes here and there on Youtube. I came across them by accident one day and they seemed very familiar. I believe I saw some of this programme in elementary school. I'm also from Canada, and was grade school in the early nineties, so it is entirely possible that we saw the same show.
