A soldier comes back home after the war (First or Second World War). He is married and has got a son and a daughter. There is an economic crisis in his country. He is unemployed. He does odd jobs to supplement the family income (potato harvester, miner...)
In the mine, there is an accident. He saves a co-worker but he drowns. His family suffers much for his death. His son becomes man of the house.
