I am searching for a film that was released in either the late 1970's or 1980's, an Italian period drama set in the 19th century, I believe. I don't remember it well, but it involves our protagonist, who end up at the house of a family with a daughter, an ugly and sickly woman. She is young, and sort of magnificently ugly. I believe he was first repulsed but by the end he falls in love with her and they make love. She then dies, and he is left obsessed, perhaps even possessed, and is a ruin. The ending of the film he is sitting in a bar or tavern and we realize he has told this story to the people, who then laugh and laugh it him, it was a little surrealistic I think. I remember the film's colors as being warm and rich with a lot of dark browns and earth tones. Thanks!
