It sounds like Coming Home, based on a novel Rosamund Pilcher. The young woman was Emily Mortimer, and Lawrence Fox played the young man. It covers a long period of time, and features Kiera Knightly, as the younger version of Julia, Mortmer's character. Joanna Lumley and Peter O'Toole also star.
