Back in the 1970's when I used to babysit on New Year's Eve, I remember seeing an old black and white, sort of film noir, movie about a man who's supposed to kill a woman (I think on New Year's Eve), but she is very depressed and actually wants to die because she has nothing to live for. So he doesn't kill her, but instead devotes his life to making her happy and giving her everything she's ever wanted. And then, at the end of the year (or several years later, I don't remember), when she's very happy, there's a scene which involves him trying to kill her again, now that she has everything to live for. But I don't remember whether or not he actually does. Does anyone know the name of this movie?
