I'm sorry, this is really vague, I think I saw this film sometime in 2002-2005 and this is all I remember: set in the 16-1700s (i think), about a man who lives a simple life, he seems kind, then things happen (I think he falls in love but it ends tragically and some more horrible things happen) and at the end of the film he has climbed the social ladder and lives in a grand house and is rich and has some kids, which he beats with a cane, and now he's become really stern and evil-ish because of everything that's happened to him.
