Looking for the name of a 1940's black-and-white movie I saw as a child to which I was foolishly taken by my father and which left me completely terrified. As I remember the film, a young girl is held captive (by a fmily member?) in a large house and ultimately is rescued when she throws a note (or handkerchief) out of a window of the house. A man passing by picks up the note (or handkerchief), sees the young girl and her desperate situation, and contacts the police who arrive just in the nick of time!
