I believe it was a British Drama set in the early 19th century, possibly filmed in the 1980's. A young girl of about 12 years happens upon the home of a terminally ill man. His house is in disarray and she tries to tidy it. He gruffly dismisses her but she persistently continues to visit him and eventually they strike a strong friendship. Her care for him gets noticed by her caretakers and being a small town, rumors start about the inappropriate relationship. She is forbidden from visiting him and when she goes anyway, she finds him gone.
