It was either a mini series or tv film in which I think a convict had to pick a wife. The one he chose had short hair and he paid the person handing her over so that she had a headscarf. They were given a parcel of land but he kept trying to escape. Eventually they fell in love. Not sure if it was set in America or Australia. I think I saw it in late 80's early 90's it was in colour.
