I saw a romance film sometime during the eighties of an affluent young man who visits the country and becomes infatuated with a farmer's daughter. She falls for him, and they have a whirlwind romance. When he leaves, they plan to meet in town. When she arrives, he sees her but hides out of fear. Years later, with a family of his own in tow, he returns to her village, discovering that not only has she long since passed but that he has a son he never knew of. I've been hunting for this for years. I can't recall the title.
