Title Help

I'm trying to remember the name of a period drama set in India that came out in the 90's. It is a love story or star-crossed-lovers type plot, I believe, and the boy and girl may have known each other as children and they are split up and it follows their lives, though I'm fuzzy with those details. I do remember the girl being in an Indian temple and learning to dance and practicing the Kama Sutra arts for the temple- the teacher was a woman. I also sort of recall a scene where the boy character (possibly an other man in the film) was sentenced to be executed and I remember that it was to be by being stepped on by an elephant. It is driving me nuts and I'm sorry I can't remember more of the details for identification clues but any leads would be appreciated!
