The "long lost son who returns" turns out to be the bastard child of an uncle or something like that. This is all about getting an inheritance or title I believe, and I want to say that a couple of the characters were Simon and/or Peter. Also, unless I am mixing this up with another story, they end up finding the dead brother's body in a flooded quarry on the family property.
I saw this on PBS back in the 1980s.
