I'm trying to think of an older movie where the father goes off to war and the mother opens a boarding house to make ends meet. She has children & the movie chronicles all the things that happen while the father is away. Every night the mother writes in a journal to her husband. I believe the film is black and white and the family also has some kind of hound dog that seems to often be present during the story. Any thoughts?? Thanks!
