I'm thinking of a period movie or TV series, set in the late-19th or early 20th-century, where a man "buys" his lover from her husband. I know Bright Young Things has a similar scene, but in the movie I'm thinking of, it's a very dramatic moment. The husband asks for a sum and tells the hero to nod, which he does. I believe the wife might even be on the other side of a door.
