Victorian era period, I thought it was a Catherine Cookson, but might be wrong. There is a woman who falls in love with a man who cheats on her. She becomes a maid to a man who becomes an amputee from a war or work injury, not sure which and he wants her to become his mistress. She resists but falls in love with him at the end.
