Title Help

Hi I would like to know the title of a film I saw as a child in the 1950s. I think it was a British film in black & white and was about a couple with a young girl who split up. The child is left one night with a baby sitter who leaves early, throwing her cigarette in a waste paper basket on the way out. The house/flat catches fire and the girl is eventually rescued by her father coming over the roof. I had nightmares for years! and still have a very real fear of fires,
