I saw a foreign film (drama) in the late 1990's or early 2000's. It was about the hard life of a small rural village. I believe they were speaking Danish- not sure.
Things I remember about the film:
One of the young men, was raping a handicap girl in a barn and after being stabbed he was banished from the village.
The school teacher of the village had a passion for teaching one bright girl. She will be the only one leaving the village to attend college in math. The teacher, who is alone, commits suicide in his home shortly after she left for college.
I don't know if this film was independent or not.
