Title Help

Pls help me with the title of a romance drama movie I watched in the 90s but am not sure if it was released in d 90s. I could remember there was a girl I think some sort of native (from an island) returning home from abroad via a ship/boat and one of the sailor there slept with her on board and after they got to the island their passionate love affair continues on the island to the extent that her native childhood boyfriend couldn't do anything. Later on in the film I think this sailor eventually have something to do with their political things there. Pls its really long couldn't remember vividly again I need help on the title. Would be glad to see favourable reply. Tanx
