Rutger Hauer was also in the movie 'Eureka' (but that was set in gold-rush Alaska) which might be why the confusion. Was the well poisoned by a chained man throwing a piece of meat into it? If so, it was Tom Burlinson trying to rescue his stolen bride. It was a midieval European setting & the movie is sometimes known as 'The Sword & the Rose'
Otherwise you might possibly be thinking of 'Prima Nacht' which was about some tradition of nobility being allowed to deflower all the young women in the village. But then the nobleman decides to keep the stolen woman & her fiance/bridegroom attacks to get her back.
