Title Help

In reply to:

Hello,
Please help.
The title I am looking for is a movie set in the 30/40's(I believe).
A young man, I think a writer, stays in a sort of boarding house owned by am older lady. (I think maybe some sort of friend of a friend situation).
I also think I recall this "friend" was associated with the police.
Anyway, the young man meet a married very eclectic/artsy couple (I think the wife (?) is an artist and the husband (a somewhat abusive, cheating drunk) is in the film/dance/music biz.. maybe a director)that lives in an upstairs apartment. The young man developes a rather close relationship with them both, but a somewhat intimate one with the wife as the husband is often gone.
I remember bits and pieces such as:
1) there's a book/novel that is either borrowed, or is the work of the writer.
2) there's a scene where the wife gets drunk because of her unhappy marriage and the young man consoles her on her couch.
I believe a continuation of that scene of that they stay up all night talking (I don't think anything physical happenss, but they do connect. They sorry spend time on the "roof" outside the couple's window.
I also believe that someone gets murdered, or is believed to be murdered.
I think it's the wife, but actually she just goes away to spend time with relatives (?) Without saying goodbye to the young man.
However, the police think the young man is responsible because the husband accuses him.
*** The relationship between the young man and husband goes sour when the young man interferes and protects the wife from the abusive husband.
3) there's also a scene where the window is on the payphone calling the young man at the boarding house and discusses a way for them to be together.

Sorry, I know this is all over the map...
Please help. It's was a great movie!!
Thank you.
