Hello! This is a looooong shot but “Brick” (2005) May be the movie you’re thinking of. I don’t recall the main character working at a newspaper. All the characters were in High School. The movie was scripted like a film noir movie from the 1940’s but the characters were modern day (then 2005). Unlikely this is the right movie but it sounds similar. Good luck!
