I believe the movie you are talking about is Elvira Madigan. The man is in the military and deserts to take the woman away. Of course, he is being tracked as he is AWOL. The couple try to live on nothing and the visitor is a military investigator. Anyway the deserter decides to sacrifice is life and the woman,also. End of movie ends with single gun shot and leaves it up to you to finish it. very little dialogue in this movie. Hope I am right and that this helps. Siskel and Ebert critiqued it One of them for sure thought it was great cannot remember what was said by other one.
