Title Help

I remember watching a period drama as a child but the only thing I can remember is a prominent female character either jumping or falling into a river whilst wearing black clothing but I can’t remember the title. It is set I believe in the Victorian era. I know a man pulls her from the river but I think she dies from her injuries. Any help would be appreciated. I would have seen it in the late 90’s/early 2000’s but I don’t think it was old back then. So probably filmed in the late 80’s/early 90’s.
