Title Help

Looking for a title of a book that was also made into a movie....the girl was a seamstress and worked for a prominent dress shop and met a soldier...he left but she kept waiting for him because he said he would be back on a certain day. He never came...she somehow ended up with a rich guy and ran into the soldier again...he was married..his wife died or something and her husband at the end had her killed by a firing squad. Some reason the name midnight in the title sticks in my head..it had to be in the 1980s...
