Title Help

In reply to:

I've no idea how long ago I saw this movie, but it was on late night TV and in black and white, so it must have been 30 or 40 years ago for me to have been watching.

A very poor and uneducated young man took a job for the winter as a live-in guardian of a sawmill/lumber camp. A young woman had married into a terrible family. Her husband was very abusive, and she escapes from him before she gives birth to the baby. She ends up at the lumber camp where she passes out near a pile of firewood. The watchman finds her, takes her in and looks after her. He gets a local woman to help with the birth of a little boy. The mother doesn't recover, but before she dies, not knowing that she is already married, the young man gets a preacher to marry them. He takes the baby back to his farm and he and his father begin to raise it.

When the little boy gets to be about four years old, the mountain-trash family somehow learns about him and since they are his blood kin, the court allows them to take him away. Years later, when the boy grows up, he falls in love with a girl from a very well-to-do family. Her father confronts the boy and when the boy fights back in self-defense, the girl's father is killed. The boy winds up in court, being charged for murder. The guy that had helped his mother at that lumber mill, ends up on the jury and causes a mistrial. The movie ends soon after that, but I'm not sure how it does.

I'd really like to know the name of this movie, so I can try to find a DVD of it. Without the title, nor even the names of any of the actors, I've never known where to begin searching until I happened up on this site. Such a great and touching story. I do hope someone knows the title.
