Title Help

I'm trying to find out the title to a film. It is a period drama in which two women are pregnant, one is the maid and the other a lady. All I can remember it that the ladies baby needs to die. The maid sacrifices her own child by suffocating it against her body and pass this as the ladies dead child. I believe the maid dies at the end of the film as well. I know this may not be enough but it's all I can remember. Also, it was not an English film, perhaps French or Italian. I was too young to know which one it was!
