Hi Mocci,
Welcome to the forum! Thanks for joining!
This group is getting very international, which is great!
I am in The Netherlands by the way. Period dramas seem very popular here as lots of shops (including pharmacies!) sell the dvds.
Are they shown much on Norwegian TV?
What are your favorite period dramas janette and mocci?
Have a nice weekend! :-)

Thanks for the welcome!

Well period dramas are really not that often shown on Norwegian Television, that's a pity. However during Christmas there is always one or two different period dramas (tv series) shown. For Christmas 2009 the German period drama Buddenbrooks was shown and for Christmas 2008, Cranford season 1 was on. But apart from Christmastime we hardly get to see anything costume related. Period dramas are also hard to find even in music/dvd shops so I mostly buy my dvds online.

Oh dear I have so many favorites, hard to pick just one.  Tongue
My favorites for now are Wuthering heights ( the latest adaption starring Tom Hardy - gorgeous!) and Tess of D`Urbervilles. Both dramas are filled with such passion and tragic outcome.

I also have a soft spot for Lark rise to Candleford, cant wait for season 3 on dvd! Cranford is also really good, Im waiting for season 2 to arrive in my mailbox. Smiley

Hi mocci,
Sorry to hear that you don't get to see many period dramas on TV! At least we have the internet, like you say, for ordering DVDs! :-)
One Dutch online store that just might deliver to Norway is http://www.freerecordshop.nl
It has a period drama deal at the moment: 2 DVDs (or boxsets) for 12 EUR.
I recently bought Lorna Doone and The Barchester Chronicles using that deal.

Buddenbrooks looks nice from the photos on imdb. Thanks very much for pointing it out.
It would do my German good to see it! :-)

I haven't seen that version of Wuthering Heights, so I will try to soon! Apparently there is another version that is being made:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1181614/

I also like Tess of the D'Urbervilles, despite it being so sad...
I have recently started watching the 2002 mini-series The Forsyte Saga. It is also very sad, but extremely gripping! I'm only half way through, yet so much has happened!

I think my favorite period dramas so far are the 1995 versions of Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice! A bit predictable I know! :-) I also love the 1996 version of The Moonstone.

Hope your Cranford DVDs have arrived!

Thanks for the freerecordshop tip, I will definitely check it out! Smiley I think 2dvds for 12 EUR is a bargain? Smiley I haven't seen Lorna Doone yet but the Barchester Chronicles is already in my collection.

Yea I also love Sense and sensibility and Pride and Predjudice, dont get me started about Mr. Darcy.  Tongue But Im not all that for happy endings, I tend to prefer the really sad and sobbing ones. Im weird I know it.   Wink

Hi mocci,

Yes, I agree that 12 Eur for 2 is a bargain, especially when the box contains a mini-series with multiple discs! Please let me know if you need help navigating the Dutch site!

I tend to prefer happy endings as I get very sad otherwise :-)

I really enjoy watching Loorna Doone (2000). The music is particularly nice. It is very romantic, but also has some fighting scenes, so may appeal to men a bit more! :-)

How is the Barchester Chronicles? Is it romantic? I haven't watched it yet!

I didn't know there was a production of Lorna Doon in 2000. I must look for it. I read the book as a kid and loved it.
I heard this morning that they have just got a new director for hte film of Wuthering Heights.
Cheers

Currently Im watching The devils mistress, its ok but not one of my favorites.

Janette, see http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0259786/ for that version of Lorna Doone. I really recommend it!
Mocci, Aidan Gillen plays a pretty mean character in it, just a warning! Smiley

Last night I started watching Casanova on TV. I paused it using the "pause live TV" function on the remote, but then managed to lose it, so I didn't see the end! Have either of you (or anyone else) seen it to tell me how it ends?

Doesn't matter if he still looks dashing.  Tongue But I can see why they chose him for a mean role, he has that bad boy look about him. Smiley

janette - It was the movie from the same year:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402894/
Strange that two versions came out the same year!
I haven't seen the series version, but from the theme of the film, I can see it is more for adults!
